I spent half my career in storytelling. I was in journalism and public relations in the tech space for a decade.
The other half is in technology, also about a decade plus. I have had roles in tech start-ups like head of product and engineering.
I run my own consulting-based visualization / code studio at V/R, and have done so for the last decade.
I am currently doing my own masters at NUS (Venture Creation), and I'm a founder in an EdTech start-up helping schools survive Gen AI.
I have taught five previous semesters of interactive data visualization for SUTD's MUSPP masters course.
I have also taught classes and workshops at other universities (SIT, NUS), schools (General Assembly, HyperIsland, SGCodeCampus), on user experience, frontend development and visualization.
I run the local Singapore Data Viz SG and HHSG meetup groups, and am part of the Data Visualization Society (SG chapter).
My own passion project is Visualizing Singapore (viz.sg), a community site for data viz enthusiasts.
I also do visualization prototypes and dashboards for software products. Clients include A*Star (for MOT), PSA (for MPA), Attilatech (cyber security), etc.
There are three ways to approach the viz domain - research, technical, or industry.
As a practitioner in the space I tend to approach the domain from an industry perspective with a technical slant.
However, tech is an enabler, and it should not be an arcane gatekept domain only for engineers.
With the advent of Gen AI, the more important questions will increasingly become why and how instead of what.
And thus, especially for your masters (MUSPP) which is not technically focused, the way I teach visualization is from a holistic perspective.
From low code / no code cloud platforms to programming languages / frameworks, what is important is exposure and a feel of what can be done.
I will not be teaching programming. I believe Bayi will be covering that.

The workshop is broken up into 3 segments, all of which layer on top of one another.
